First Birthday Party

I LOVE creating. DIY is my space. My thing. One of my favorite things to do is party planning! I wanted to do something special, something memorable for my little one for her first birthday. We didn’t have a huge budget so I wanted to do most of it myself. Honestly, maybe there is some pride involved. I just love to create, and say that I did it, I made it. I don’t know, maybe it’s some weird obsession I have.

I wanted my daughter’s first birthday to be themed something special. Something that meant something to her. She loves owls. In a book we read, “Night Night Friends”, the owl page is her favorite. I made her an owl mobile as well, so I decided that this theme fit.

I created the decorations, put together simple goodie bags for babies, and made her an owl cake! I am not a baker, so this is a very rough cake for those of you who are gifted in baking and decorating. For me, I was very proud of this cake!

I wrapped chocolates in little owl wrappers. They were so cute and easy to do, and added to the theme.474A3938

We tend to stick with feeding our baby healthy foods, so they typical cupcake were out. We went with chocolate beet cupcakes with beets from our garden and a cream cheese frosting (no food coloring). The top cupcakes were for the babies and were healthy applesauce cupcakes.

I wanted some baby friendly snacks, so we used some organic baby puffs, which were a hit with the babies!

We wanted to do some cute cake pops….they are supposed to be owls! Ha! They didn’t turn out quite the way we expected but they were super cute!!

We gave our daughter an applesauce cupcake to try. We didn’t let her eat the whole thing but she enjoyed it.474A3951474A3953474A3971
My owl cake I made! I used small cake pans, stacked the layers on top of each other, and then frosted it. Yes, I did use fondant for the eyes, beak and feet. We did not eat them…it was just for pictures! I was so excited with how it turned out! As I said, I’m not a baker, and I am terrible at decorating, so I was proud with how this turned out!!
We decided to use the cupcakes for the party, and do a separate cake smash photo shoot with the owl cake.

At first, she didn’t know what to think of it! Haha!

Then she tasted it and was happy…no smashing from this baby though! She delicately used one finger to taste each bite. Not quite what we expected for our photo shoot, but still cute!
